Charles Bock is Pitt’s 2013-14 Fred R. Brown, which recognizes the accomplishments of talented fiction writers, usually emerging novelists. This award was made possible by Fred Brown, a life-long resident of Western Pennsylvania and alumnus of the University of Pittsburgh.

Bock’s novel Beautiful Children, was a New York Times bestseller and notable book of the year, and won the Sue Kaufmann Prize for best first
novel from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. His fiction and non-fiction has appeared in Harper’s, Esquire, The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, Slate, and
the Iowa Review, as well as in numerous anthologies. He’s received fellowships from the Civitella Ranieri foundation in Umbria Italy, Yaddo, UCross, and the Vermont Studio
Center. Bock earned a Master of Fine Arts in fiction and literature from Bennington College and has taught fiction at the Gotham Writers Workshop in New York City.
